As this 2014-15 school year has drawn to a close, Harrison Community Schools and Chartwells School Dining, are proud yet humbled when we reflect on the success of our new Backpack Program that was initiated last fall at Harrison Community Schools.
Chartwells staff members work closely with students daily, and were well aware of the dire need for weekend meal help here in our own community. They learned of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan’s partnership with other school communities, and were inspired into action last summer. Through their partnership with the Food Bank and with the help of school administration, they were able to launch this much needed program last October!
Chartwells wanted to be a strong partner with the Harrison community, so they turned talk into action, by donating $1,000 to help lift the initial program expenses off the ground. They will continue to help fund this over the next four years!
72 elementary students in Harrison were able to receive food for the weekend this past school year! For just $100 per student, they are provided with nutritious food for meals on Saturdays and Sundays, with extra food during holiday breaks, for the entire school year.
Please contact Amy Gillespie in the Harrison Food Service Department at 989-539-7202 for more information or donation opportunities.
