Chartwells K12 Ushers in New Era of School Lunch Transparency and Nutrition Education
Fresh food concepts and mobile tools help families learn about, explore and enjoy school menus
CHICAGO – April 2, 2015 – The food and nutrition experts at Chartwells K12 are bringing greater clarity and transparency to school dining and making paper menus a thing of the past through a new partnership with Denver-based technology developer Nutrislice, Inc. Together, Chartwells K12 and Nutrislice are putting digital menus and nutrition information into the hands of millions of families nationwide including nutrition analysis, ingredients, allergens and photos, easily available on-the-go via smartphone, email or web.
"Chartwells K12 is helping students eat well, explore new foods and learn about nutrition through our fresh foods and new approach to communicating about our menus with our school communities," said Rhonna Cass, President of Chartwells K12. "Our partnership with Nutrislice is a way to inform and engage parents and students about nutrition where they often are today – on screens and on-the-go."
Features and advantages of the Chartwells K12 Nutrislice offering include:
- Easily accessible: Dynamic school menus visible wherever families may be via district-specific websites and a free smartphone app, supported on Apple and Android devices
- Engaging: Colorful, simple presentation of foods and detailed descriptions to allow families to plan balanced meals throughout the day
- Informative: A special allergy filter to help families dealing with food allergies and special diets explore lunch options
- Technology integration: Nutrislice syncs with Chartwells proprietary Webtrition menu planning program, a USDA-approved school menu system
"Research, and our work in schools, shows that parents and students want more information about the foods kids eat at school," said Nutrislice Co-Founder and CEO, Brian Crapo. "We share the Chartwells K12 vision of bringing greater clarity and transparency to school dining; partnering with them means we can impact school nutrition on a national scale."
All of Chartwells K12's approximately 4,000 schools will have Nutrislice implemented by the end of the 2015-16 school year and more than 600 of those are already using Nutrislice, making this the largest advance in school nutrition communication of its kind.
The new partnership is part of Chartwells K12's commitment to innovation, including menu updates and enhancements, school café renovations, and partnerships with the National Gardening Association and Prevent Child Abuse America, all of which are transforming the school lunch experience.
"Integrating Nutrislice into how we partner with every school is another way we're evolving what school dining can be, which involves smarter lunchrooms and a wide variety of menu options that students love," added Cass. "This partnership enhances our fresh approach to delicious foods and also has the ability to impact how a generation thinks about and engages with their food."
